Hop, Humulus lupulus

Family of cannabaceae

It seems that the first users of hop were the monks because they needed to cool down their sexual desires which had to be very strong in close circles such as convents and cloisters. The monks were the first growers of this plant which is used to flavour and to preserve beer. This plant grows along rivers and streams and in Spring time it is possible to pick up its tender tops which have a particular bitter flavour.

The tops of the plant are normally boiled and dressed with oil and lemon, or they are cooked in omelettes or they are used to flavour delicious risotto, in that case the tops are cooked like the tops of asparagus. This vegetable is not recommended if one has planned sexual performances.
