This plant grows on fresh soils rich of silica, especially in humid areas such as clearings, especially those of conifer forests, and along mountain rivers and streams.

Its leaves can be used to prepare salads and its shoots, which have a bitter flavour, can be boiled and served like asparagus. Leaves and stems give products for the cure of mouth aphtha. It is possible to find it all over the Apennines.
