Herbs and flowers

Salvia dei prati, Salvia pratensis

Family of labiateae

It belongs to the same botanical family of officinal sage, which grows in our kitchen gardens and has world-wide employ as aromatic herb, but the "salvia dei prati" is not used for cooking purposes, even if its tender leaves can be used to prepare minestroni. This herb blossoms in may and shows a beautiful dark violet spike.

The flowers and leaves have tonic and digestive properties, moreover they are antiseptic and can be used in the preparation of home-made toothpaste.
