Along
the ascent and subsequent descent of Monte Verruca it is possible to see,
on the summit of the mountain, the Fortezza della Verruca, a defensive
fortification which played a key role in the fifteenth and sixteenth century
wars between Pisa and Firenze. As you descend you come across the statues
of Monte Verruca, marble works which probably came from the nearby fortress.
Note that although the unpaved track coming down the mountain is very
wide and its bends are good fun, it should be approached with care because
the stone surface is treacherous and slippery.
