On
the final part of the descent from Monte Verruca you can see the famous
Torre di Caprona which was besieged at length by the Guelphs in 1289.
Dante Alighieri also participated in the siege and even cites it in Canto
XXI of the Inferno. Today it is no longer as important and imposing as
it was and it is no longer threatened by foreign enemies but by the subsidence
of the ground due to a quarry underneath.
