After having slept off the generous and excellent dinner consisting of
authentic Romagnola cuisine washed down with some good Sangiovese, walk
back along the asphalt road to Campigna and take the unpaved road that
forks off on the right and begins to climb amidst the beautiful forest
of fir trees. When you get to a first junction, don't cross the stream
but go right along a track that climbs, steeply in places, until it narrows
and then comes out in the car park for the small ski station facilities.
Keep to the right along the road, which immediately becomes a well-marked
cross-country ski piste that takes you to the Passo di Piancancelli (1490m).
After admiring the beautiful view of the Mugello, descend along the forest
road that takes you back to the Borbotto bivouac from where you started
out.
* It's worth stopping off at the Osteria Il Rifugio (tel. 055/8375055)
in the village of Castagno d'Andrea below, where you can sample and enjoy
some good Tuscan cooking.
