Driving along the tuscan roads you don't find only olives, good wines
and restaurants. Sometimes in a isolated farm house or in a modern laboratory
you can meet some original artists or artisans. They work in the middle
of the countryside, but they present their works all over the world. We
would like to tell you the history of some of this people.
Anne Shingleton, Certaldo, loc. Bagnano
Visits to the studio-home, halfway between Florence and Siena, of British
painter-sculptress ANNE SHINGLETON will allow glimpses of work in progress.
Shingleton is an outstanding figure in the great European return to representational
art. She is a grand-master in many media: drawing, etching in colour and
monochrome, pastels, oils, and sculpture in bronze. Holding an honours
degree in zoology, she centres much of her work on animals in ways not
often seen before.
Filippo Romagnoli, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa
Filippo Romagnoli lives and works in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. He learned
the art of wood carving from his father and grand father that started
the family’s activity in Florence in the early 1920’s. Today
Filippo is among the few young artisans in the area still working with
great traditional knowledge and skill.
Filippo, designs and creates unique objects such as mirror frames, bagoures,
carved Florentine boxes and carved furniture. He also restores major antique
carvings. His work is centred mostly on Florentine renaissance and baroque
stiles.
Very friendly and welcoming, Filippo is always glad to show his dusty
work shop where he will explain the techniques and methods of his work.
Pietro Maddalena, Certaldo, loc. Bagnano
Pietro Elia Maddalena graduated in Three-Dimensional Design in the Ceramics
Section at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, England, having
studied under Henry Hammond and Paul Barron. He spent two years working
and studying at the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop in Devon under
Peter Starkey, and in collaboration with David Leach and Mick Casson,
among others. In 1980 he established a pottery workshop in Tuscany for
stoneware, raku and porcelain. His work is shown in the best galleries
in Italy and abroad.
