Getting around in Tuscany

By car

Tuscan highways are divided into three arteries:

  • Through A1 one can reach Tuscany from north (Bologna, Milan) or south (Rome, Naples) and runs through the whole region touching the cities of Prato, Firenze, e Arezzo.
  • Through A12 (Genova - Rosignano) which crosses the Tyrrhenian coast connecting the cities of Massa, Pisa and Livorno with Liguria and Genova.
  • A11 represents the connection between Firenze (and A11) withes the Tyrrhenian corridor and the sea. It crosses the cities of Firenze, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca.

Besides the highways Tuscany is crosse by several important roads which allow fast connections with the major centers.
Italian highways usually are not free, they have frequent service areas with restaurants or snack bars. Speed limit on highways is 130 Km per hour.

By plane

Even if the major international Italian airports are Milano Malpensa and Roma Fiumicino, Tuscany is well connected with the other Italian and European cities through the airports of Pisa and Firenze.

Train is a good way to travel in Italy, cheap and ecological, allows you to reach both the large cities and, thanks to its comprehensiveness, the small towns.

In Tuscany operate several public transport companies which allow you to move from city to city through the coach, or to move inside the larger cities by bus.
