Inhabitants in 1991: 3.637

The Stazzema territory in the Versilia, extends for 80,72 square kilometres on the coastal slopes of the Alpi Apuane, in the high valley of the river Vezza.

The municipality reached its present day aspect in 1929 when the district of Arni, detached from the municipality of Vagli Sotto, was aggregated to it. Stazzema, which prior to the X century was under the jurisdiction of the Lucca Curia; was ceded by the Bishop of Lucca Gherardo, to the Viscounts Farolmo, from whom descended those Nobles di Corvaia and di Vallecchia who governed the centre in the successive centuries. From 1254, the year in which Lucca extended its dominion in the Versilia, Stazzema followed the fate of the neighbouring Pietrasanta, ending up under the power of Firenze in 1484, it was raised to capital of the high Versilia in 1776 with all its Vicariate, composed of the same name town and the districts of Cardoso, Farnocchia, Galleno, Levigliani, Pomezzana, Pruno, Volegno, Retignano and Terrinca. During the Nazi occupation the population of the municipality underwent innumerable and cruel reprisals: in August 1944, in the locality of Sant’Anna, at the foot of Monte Lieto, one of the most atrocious massacres by the Nazis in the whole Liberation struggle, took place against the defenceless population.

Places top visit:
S. Maria Assunta, ancient Romanic parish church, has a rose window in its façade from the 1400s. The interior holds numerous works of art.
