The stone of Firenzuola

Even more the transmission to the following generations of the art and secrets of the work.

in Firenzuola

The quarrying areas of the "Firenzuola stone" are in the valley of Santerno and Rovigo, and in the mountains east of Piancaldoli.
This stone is very similar for its grain and color to the one which came from the Fiesole hills and was used so often by Brunelleschi, Michelangelo and Vasari

The Museum
The "Museum of the stone of Firenzuola", will be opened in November 1999 and will be a part of a wider project called "Mugello and Val di Sieve Museum System".
It will be placed in the underground rooms of the City Hall rock. The rooms can probably be dated back to the end of the 15th century, also the fortification of the city made by Antonio da Sangallo goes back to that period.

The museum will be divided in three sections: the first, will contain high quality manufactures of local production; the second will be dedicated to the techniques and instruments needed to work the stone, the third will be dedicated to the modern objects of design.
This way the museum will be conceived and experienced as a deposit of the collective memory, as a point of convergence of the historical relations indispensable for a more mature interpretation of the present. Moreover the museum will be a place of meeting which will be able to produce the goods and services needed to encourage the stone field and make it more and more valuable.
This process has already started with the constitution of the "Consortium of the cities of the ornamental stones", with the creation of the stone cutters' school, with the exhibition created by the municipal government named "Dal Bosco e dalla Pietra" and with the partecipation of the local artisans to important exhibitions.
