most authoritative and important Florentine daily newspaper, La
Nazione was established thanks to Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who wanted
it to be an instrument to promote the unity of Italy (hence the
paper's name).
The first issue appeared on July 19, 1859. In its almost one hundred
and fifty-year existence, a number of important writers have contributed
to the paper, including Carducci, De Amicis, and Alexandre Dumas
(who followed the March of the Thousand).
The paper has changed ownership a number of times over the years
and has evolved into a national daily newspaper.
