The
municipal territory extends for 17,20 square kilometres in the low Lunigiana,
on the right of the Magra, it forks in two parts separated by the municipality
of Tresana to the north and Bolano (Liguria) to the south. It was originally
a centre of Lords.
Castle donated in 884 to the Abbey of Aulla by the Marquis Adalberto
di Toscana, Podenzana became the dominion of the Aulla branch of the Malaspina.
It remained to the descendents of Corrado I, who had inherited it in the
division of the family assets in 1221, until the French invasion. With
the Vienna Treaty of 1815 it was assigned to the Estensi, who made
it community capital of the province of Luniogiana, dependent to the
Duchy of Modena.
