The
municipal territory of San Romano in Garfagnana extends for 26.04 square
kilometres in a panoramic position on the left slope of the high valley
of the Serchio, from the trough of the valley bottom almost to the watershed
Appenninico.
Until the middle of the 1200s San Romano was dominion of the
Gherardinghi Counts who, enclosed in the Verrucole castle, dominated
the valley. Then after a brief period of autonomy, it followed the destiny
of the high Garfagnana, first under the jurisdiction of Lucca and
then from 1448 under the Estensi.
