The Municipal territory of Pergine Valdarno in the Valdarno Superiore, extends for 46,68 square kilometres occupying the hilly ridge which forms the watershed with the Val di Chiana to the south, the Val d’Ambra to the north and the valley bottom along the course of the Arno. Already a Court and Castle in XV century it became capital of the community in 1774.

The Castle of Pergine, mentioned for the firs time in a document of 1056, was originally part of the Abbey of Prataglia. Then it passed, during the XII century, under the dominion of the Abbey of Agnano in Val d’Ambra, it became part of the Fiorentino State when the Abbot who was in charge at that time put Pergine, together with all the other possessions of the Abbey under the protection of the republic (1349). Taken by force from the bands of the Ubertini, the Tarlati and the Pazzi del Valdarno who claimed the possession,  the Castle was immediately re-conquered by the Fiorentini, who sent in a company of troops captained by Albertaccio Ricasoli (1350). In 1568 Cosimo I dei Medici put the five communities which constituted the territory of the Abbey under his Lordship, that is Badia di Agnano, Migliari, Montozzi, San Pancrazio and Pergine, creating in that circumstance a community body spoken of as the “Five district communities of the Val d’Ambra”.
